What is anastrozole?
Side effects of Anastrozole after 5 years reduces estrogen levels in postmenopausal women, which can slow the growth of certain types of breast tumors that require estrogen to develop.
Anastrozole is used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is often given to women whose cancer has progressed even after taking tamoxifen (Nolvadex, Soltamox).
Anastrozole may also be used for purposes not listed in this leaflet.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use anastrozole if you are allergic to it or if you have not yet gone through menopause.
Anastrozole is not approved for use in men or children.
Do not take anastrozole if you are also taking tamoxifen.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
- heart problems;
- coronary artery disease (blocked arteries);
- high cholesterol; or
- osteoporosis or low bone mineral density.
Hormonal cancer treatments can make your bones weak. You are more likely to have a fracture while taking anastrozole. Talk to your doctor about how to maintain bone health.
Although it is unlikely that a postmenopausal woman will become pregnant, anastrozole can be harmful to an unborn baby. A negative pregnancy test may be required before starting this treatment. Use effective birth control if you are not postmenopausal. Continue to use birth control for at least 3 weeks after your last dose of anastrozole. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the medication as soon as possible, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not take two doses at once.

What should I avoid while taking anastrozole?
Avoid driving or participating in hazardous activities until you know how anastrozole affects you. Your reactions may be affected.
How should I take anastrozole?

Anastrozole is usually taken once daily. Follow your doctor's dosing instructions carefully.
