Crown Event Center: A New Era for Fayetteville’s Arts and Economy

Beyond serving as a cultural venue, the Crown Event Center is envisioned as a catalyst for economic growth in Cumberland County.

The Crown event center is set to become a transformative addition to downtown Fayetteville, North Carolina, blending cultural enrichment with economic development. This $145 million, 134,000-square-foot facility is designed to replace the aging Crown Theatre and Arena, which opened in 1967, and to serve as a modern hub for entertainment, conventions, and community events.

A Vision for the Future

Strategically located at the intersection of Gillespie Street and Ottis F. Jones Parkway, adjacent to the Judge E. Maurice Braswell Cumberland County Courthouse, the Crown Event Center aims to revitalize the downtown area. The facility will feature a three-story main event hall with seating for over 3,000 attendees, VIP suites and lounges, a rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of the city, and versatile spaces for meetings and banquets. Advanced acoustics, flexible stage configurations, and state-of-the-art backstage amenities are planned to accommodate a wide range of performances and events.

Community-Centric Design

The development of the Crown Event Center has been guided by extensive community input. A Community Engagement Committee, comprising diverse stakeholders, played a crucial role in shaping the project's guiding principles and providing feedback on the building program. This collaborative approach ensures that the facility reflects the aspirations and needs of the Fayetteville community.

Economic Impact and Funding

Beyond serving as a cultural venue, the Crown Event Center is envisioned as a catalyst for economic growth in Cumberland County. By attracting top-tier entertainment acts and hosting large-scale events, the center is expected to boost local businesses and tourism. The project is financed through the County’s Crown funding model, which utilizes revenue from the occupancy tax, food and beverage tax, and operating income from existing Crown facilities. Notably, no general fund revenue from county property or sales taxes is being used, allowing other county initiatives to continue without interruption.

Construction Timeline and Temporary Pause

Groundbreaking for the Crown Event Center occurred on October 25, 2024, marking the commencement of construction. However, in March 2025, the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners announced a 30-day pause on the project to conduct a comprehensive review. This pause allows for an independent third-party legal team to assess the project's progress, scope, and financial aspects, ensuring transparency and accountability. County leaders have expressed confidence that the project will proceed as planned following the review.
